Bass Strait, Tasmania offshore wind zone declared

The Minister for Climate Change and Energy has declared an area for offshore wind off the coast of northern Tasmania.

The Bass Strait area declaration follows consultation with local leaders, industry, fishers, unions, First Nations people and groups led by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW).

The area covers 7,100 square kilometres, is 30 kilometres from shore at its closest point, and includes a carveout for a shipping lane.

Bass Strait is the sixth area declared suitable for offshore wind development after Gippsland and Southern Ocean (Victoria), Hunter and Illawarra (NSW), and the Indian Ocean off Bunbury (WA).

The Offshore Infrastructure Registrar is accepting applications for feasibility licenses in the declared Bass Strait offshore wind zone until 12 March 2025.
